Wedgwood China Restoration
Expert Wedgwood Pottery Restoration
The Wedgwood pottery company, founded in 1759 by the pioneering Josiah Wedgwood, boasts a legacy of industrial innovation and prolific output across fine china and various distinct stoneware bodies. Given this vast production history spanning over two centuries, our restorers have repaired a multitude of Wedgwood items over the years, from delicate tableware to iconic ornamental pieces. Our Restoration Expertise
Wedgwood's most famous creations present unique restoration challenges, which our specialists are highly skilled at addressing. We frequently restore:- Jasperware: Repairing breaks, chips, and damage to the iconic unglazed, matte surface—most famously in "Wedgwood Blue" with applied white bas-reliefs, but also in rarer colours like lilac, yellow, or crimson. We focus on meticulously cleaning the porous 'biscuit' surface to remove stains and carefully reconstructing the delicate neoclassical figures, garlands, and scenes.
- Black Basalt Ware: Restoring this tough, unglazed black stoneware, often involving the re-attachment of handles and finials on teapots, vases, and busts, ensuring the matte finish and sharp relief details are perfectly preserved.
- Queen's Ware (Creamware): Mending breaks on early and antique earthenware table services, renowned for their durability, fine form, and glossy glaze.
- Commemorative and Ornamental Wares: Repairing notable pieces like the Portland Vase replicas, cameo plaques, medallions, and busts, which require detailed sculptural work and precise colour matching.
- Lustre Ware: Carefully repairing early 20th-century decorative pieces like the Fairyland Lustre collection, ensuring the iridescent glaze and intricate hand-painted designs are conserved.
The Repair Process
Josiah Wedgwood's commitment to quality made his wares extremely durable, but even the strongest ceramics are vulnerable to accidents. Since Wedgwood's various bodies (stoneware, earthenware, and fine china) have different compositions, our restoration techniques are tailored to each specific material to achieve a flawless, museum-quality result. Our process ensures that all structural repairs are stable and that the restored area—whether a matte basalt finish or a highly-glazed bone china surface—is virtually undetectable, protecting the heritage and value of your Wedgwood collectible.Otters Restoration
Restoring this valuable Wedgwood piece was a major undertaking. The base had sustained considerable damage, with the front section being smashed and incomplete. To achieve a perfect repair, our restorers meticulously fabricated the missing sections and seamlessly integrated them with the original material. The piece has been returned to the client following a very high-standard restoration.
